4G vs WiFi Construction Security Cameras: How to Spec and Source the Right One

TL;DR

For active construction sites, 4G LTE is the default and WiFi is the exception. A sourcing guide for distributors: where each technology fails, and what to put on your line-card.

The short answer: on an active construction site, specify 4G

If the site is still being built, quote 4G LTE. A WiFi-enabled camera assumes something a construction site does not yet have — a fixed router, in a fixed building, on mains power, fed by a working broadband line that was installed before the first pour. On a live site none of that exists during the exact months when theft peaks: copper, cable drums, fuel, formwork, hand tools and small plant all disappear in the shell-and-core phase, long before the fibre engineer turns up. WiFi construction cameras are the right answer in two narrow cases — a compound with an established site office and an existing internet line, and long-term laydown or storage yards that never move. Everywhere else, 4G is the correct spec. For an importer or distributor, the practical consequence is straightforward: build the construction line-card on solar 4G SKUs and treat WiFi as an accessory model, not the core of the range.

Why WiFi loses on a site that is still being built

The network arrives last, and the risk arrives first

Site services are commissioned in a fixed order, and internet is near the end of it. A WiFi camera bought at mobilisation sits in its box until the router exists, which means the contractor pays for coverage during the period they are not covered. A 4G camera is armed the moment the SIM is inserted. That single scheduling fact closes more deals than any specification sheet, and it is the argument your sales team should lead with.

Coverage moves as the structure grows

A site is not a static floor plan. The gate moves, the material compound moves, the crane base becomes a slab, and every week of concrete and rebar puts more attenuating mass between the camera and the access point. A WiFi deployment that worked in month one needs re-surveying in month four. A 4G camera is independent of site topology — it is relocated by moving the bracket, and it comes back online where it lands.

Every WiFi camera inherits somebody else's uptime

When the site router goes down — a tripped breaker in the office container, a contractor unplugging a socket, a broadband fault nobody reports until Monday — the entire WiFi camera estate goes dark at once, and it typically goes dark overnight and at weekends when the site is empty. A 4G estate fails one camera at a time, if at all. For distributors, this is also a support-cost argument: WiFi generates network troubleshooting calls that are not your product's fault but are absolutely your problem.

Installation labour is the hidden line item

A WiFi deployment carries a site survey, access-point placement, sometimes a repeater chain, and a mains spur to power all of it. A solar 4G camera is a bracket, a SIM and a phone app. On the models we ship, installation runs 5–10 minutes per camera — which is what allows a contractor to move cameras as the works front moves instead of leaving them in the wrong place for a month.

Head-to-head, from a procurement point of view

Factor 4G LTE (solar) WiFi-enabled
Works from day one of mobilisation Yes No — waits for broadband
Needs mains power No Router and APs do
Survives site layout changes Yes, relocate the bracket Needs re-survey
Single point of failure None — per-camera Yes — the site router
Recurring cost One SIM per camera Site broadband line
Install time 5–10 min per camera Survey plus cabling
Right fit for Active sites, perimeters, gates, remote plots Site offices, fixed compounds, storage yards

The recurring-SIM objection is the one buyers raise most. It is real and you should meet it directly: a per-camera data plan is a genuine operating cost, and on a large fixed compound with existing broadband, WiFi is cheaper to run. On a site with no line, no mains at the perimeter and a moving works front, the comparison is not SIM-versus-broadband — it is SIM-versus-trenching-power-and-data-to-the-fence. Framed that way, 4G wins on capital cost as well as on schedule.

What to actually put on the quotation

The radio is the easy decision. The harder one is power, because a camera that cannot record at 03:00 in the wet season is not a security camera. Two spec choices decide that outcome.

Battery and panel. Our always-on models carry 8000mAh to 20000mAh batteries with 8W or 15W solar panels. Pair the larger panel with the larger battery for sites in the rainy season or where the mounting position gets partial shade from a structure or a crane; the smaller combination is for open, unshaded perimeters.

Recording mode. PIR-triggered cameras only wake on a heat signature crossing a defined zone. On a construction site that misses slow approaches along a fence line, activity just outside the zone, and anything happening while the sensor is in its recovery interval. AOV — Always-On Video — is the industry-generic term for 24/7 continuous recording at low standby power, using AI scene analysis instead of a passive sensor to decide what matters. It is the correct default for a site with a live theft problem, and it is what the buyer is imagining when they say "I want it recording all night."

Everything else. Resolution is 1080p to 2K as standard, with 4K available only as a custom or OEM build. Storage is microSD up to 128GB; larger capacity is a custom-order conversation, not a stock item. Outdoor housings are IP66. Do not quote figures above these, ever — a contractor who is promised more than the catalogue supplies becomes a warranty claim.

The dual-lens layout matters more on construction than on any other vertical: one lens holds the wide scene while the other covers the gate or the material stack, so a single mounting point and a single SIM do the work of two cameras.

Sourcing terms for the construction channel

The catalogue runs to 150 SKUs with wholesale prices quoted per order, of which 49 are AOV models. Manufacturing is by Shenzhen Leksell, established 2012, TÜV Rheinland certified, with CE, FCC and RoHS on the range — the certifications your customs broker and your larger contractor clients will ask for by name.

Trial orders start at an MOQ of 10 units; OEM and private label — available across the range, including all 49 AOV models — starts at 100. Dealer margin is 20% from around 10 units and 30% from around 50. Lead times are 7–10 days by air for samples, 25–40 days by sea for bulk, and 7–10 business days within Vietnam from our Ho Chi Minh City office.

A workable first order for a distributor entering the construction segment is a small mixed trial: a handful of 15W/20000mAh AOV units for the contractors with real losses, plus lower-cost SKUs for the fixed-compound and storage-yard positions where the risk profile is lighter. Put them on one site, let the contractor move them as the works front moves, and the repeat order writes itself.
