Does an AOV Solar Camera Need a Subscription If It Has a Memory Card? A Sourcing Answer

TL;DR

No — an AOV solar camera that records to microSD should work with zero recurring fee. Here is what "subscription" actually covers, and what importers must confirm in writing before ordering.

The short answer: with a card in it, no subscription should be required

An AOV solar 4G camera with a microSD card in the slot should record, retain and play back footage without any recurring payment. On all 49 of SolaGuard's AOV models, the card is the primary store — microSD up to 128GB — and continuous recording, local playback, live view, alerts and on-device AI detection all keep working whether or not a cloud plan is ever bought. Nothing is time-limited into a paywall after the box is opened. The one recurring cost that genuinely cannot be avoided on any 4G camera, ours included, is the SIM airtime: a cellular camera has no WiFi to fall back on, so the mobile carrier charges for the data. That is a carrier bill, not a camera subscription, and it is paid to the operator in the destination country, not to the factory.

That distinction is the whole of the question, and it is worth being precise about it before you place an order — because "AOV" tells you nothing about the answer. AOV stands for Always-On Video and it is an industry-generic term, used by many factories and resellers on many listings with "Box", "Pro" and similar names attached. It describes a recording behaviour, not a company and not a business model. Two cameras sold under nearly identical AOV product names can have completely different firmware policies: one records to the card unconditionally, the other treats the card as a cache and gates playback behind an account tier. You cannot infer the answer from the category name. You have to ask the specific supplier, and get it in writing.

The four things "subscription" can mean

Buyers and sellers use one word for several unrelated charges. Separating them is what makes a supplier's answer verifiable instead of reassuring.

What is being charged for Who charges it Required on SolaGuard AOV models?
Recording video to the microSD card Nobody No — included, unconditional
Live view and playback through the app App operator No — included
Cloud video backup off the camera App operator Optional add-on where offered; never required for the camera to function
AI detection (human/vehicle, scene analysis) — No — runs on the device, not in a cloud tier
4G data for the SIM Mobile carrier Yes — a data plan is needed, same as any cellular device

The row that trips up distributors is the third one. A cloud plan is a legitimate product and plenty of end users want offsite copies of footage, because a thief who takes the camera takes the card with it. The failure mode is not the existence of a cloud plan — it is a cloud plan that the camera silently depends on. If playback stops when the plan lapses, the card is a cache, not storage, and you have sold your customer a recurring bill they did not agree to.

Why a recurring fee is a distributor's problem, not the end user's

For a consumer, a monthly plan is an annoyance. For an importer moving containers, it changes the economics of the line in three ways.

It competes with your margin. Money the end customer spends on a subscription is money not spent on more cameras, and the subscription revenue does not reach you. You carry the inventory, the freight and the warranty exposure; someone else collects the recurring revenue off your installed base.

It creates support load you did not price in. Every lapsed plan, failed renewal or regional payment-method problem arrives at your phone number, not the app vendor's. Cameras deployed on farms, ranches and construction sites are frequently not registered to the person who uses them daily, so the renewal notice goes to an inbox nobody reads and the site appears to have "broken" cameras.

It is a term you do not control. Pricing and tier structure can change after your customer has bought, and you will be the one explaining it. A local-first camera has no such tail: what shipped is what works, indefinitely.

This is why local storage is worth insisting on even at the quote stage, and why our dealer programme is built on hardware margin — 20% from around 10 units, 30% from around 50 — rather than on a service attach rate. The margin is in the box.

AOV changes how much the card has to hold

A PIR-triggered camera writes short clips only when its sensor fires, which is why it misses slow movement, anything drifting at the edge of the detection zone, and events that begin outside it. AOV cameras run continuously at low standby power, using AI scene analysis to decide what deserves full-rate capture. That is the reason to buy one — a continuous timeline instead of a bag of fragments — and it is also the reason storage planning matters more than on a trigger-based camera.

Retention is a function of card capacity, resolution and the recording profile the installer sets, and the card overwrites its oldest footage when full. With microSD up to 128GB as the standard supported capacity, the practical lever for a site that needs a longer timeline is the profile: lower the continuous-mode bitrate and reserve full-rate capture for AI-classified events. On sites where footage must survive theft of the camera itself, an offsite copy is the right answer, and that is a deliberate paid choice rather than a condition of the hardware working.

What ships, and what to ask before you commit

The 49 AOV SKUs sit in four series, all IP66, all 1080p–2K, all with local microSD recording as standard. Full specifications per variant are on the product pages.

Series Variants Battery Panel Imaging
SG-C41G-10T66-V* 4 8000mAh 8W 2K (2.0MP)
SG-D42G-10F66-V* 18 8000mAh 8W 2K (2.0MP×2 dual lens)
SG-S43G-10T66-V* 11 8000mAh 8W 2K (2.0MP×3 triple lens)
SG-D42G-15F66-V* 16 20000mAh 15W 2K (2.0MP×2 dual lens)

Representative units: SG-C41G-10T66-V1 for single-lens sites, SG-D42G-10F66-V1 where a second lens earns its keep, and SG-D42G-15F66-V1 where a 20000mAh battery and 15W panel are needed for low-sun months or heavy night IR use. Higher resolution than 2K is a custom/OEM build, not a stock option — treat any stock listing claiming otherwise as a datasheet to check.

The questions to send any factory in writing

  1. With the cloud plan expired or never purchased, does local playback from the card still work? Ask for a yes/no, not a feature list.
  2. Is the app free permanently, and is any charge per device or per account?
  3. Does AI detection run on the device or in the cloud? Cloud-side AI is a subscription in disguise.
  4. What is the maximum supported card capacity, and what is the behaviour when the card is full? (Here: up to 128GB, oldest-first overwrite.)
  5. Under OEM, who controls the app and the storage policy after handover?
  6. Which certifications, held by whom? Ours: TÜV Rheinland, plus CE, FCC and RoHS, from Shenzhen Leksell, manufacturing since 2012.

OEM and private label without inheriting someone else's business model

All 49 AOV models are available for OEM and private label, which for this question matters more than branding. When you take a model under your own label, you are also taking on the customer relationship for the life of the product. If the underlying platform can introduce a fee later, that fee lands on your brand. A local-first architecture removes the risk at the source: the camera's core function has no server-side dependency to monetise.

Commercially: MOQ is 10 units for a trial order and 100 for OEM/ODM. Samples move in 7–10 days by air, bulk in 25–40 days by sea, and stock delivered from the Ho Chi Minh City office reaches Vietnamese customers in 7–10 business days. Field install runs 5–10 minutes per camera — mount, insert SIM and card, point the panel — which is what makes multi-camera sites viable for a two-person crew. The full catalogue spans 150 SKUs; wholesale pricing and OEM terms come from a person, since quantity, spec changes and lead time all move together. Custom battery, panel, storage and resolution builds are quoted the same way.
